THE GREAT WINTER FUEL PAYMENT PARODY
(A DaveInSpain-style sketch featuring one cold Brit expat , one sarcastic mate on holiday, and one plate of tapas.)
Scene: Two British guys in a freezing Spanish village bar in December.
One ( an expat resident ) is shivering in a big quilted coat.
The other ( on holiday from the UK ) is warm because heโs sitting directly under the only working heater in the entire province, eating tapas and drinking a beer like heโs on holiday.
Cold Brit:
โMateโฆ Iโm a UK national living in Spain. My house is freeeezing.
Do you reckon I can claim the Winter Fuel Payment?
I mean, itโs colder in my kitchen than it ever was in Manchester!โ
Sarcastic Mate (mouth full of tortilla):
โOh yeah, sureโฆ
And while youโre at it, donโt forget to apply for the Summer Air Conditioning Grant.
Costs me more than my mortgage, this does.
Where do I claim that one, eh?โ
Takes another bite of tapas, raises beer smugly.
Narrator:
Now, letโs break it downโthe actual rules of the Winter Fuel Payment.
The UK says you can get it abroad IF:
You moved to an eligible country before 1 Jan 2021
You were born before 26 September 1956
You have a โgenuine and sufficient linkโ to the UK
Sounds good so far, right?
Well hereโs the twistโฆ
Spain is not an eligible country.
Neither are Portugal, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, France, or Gibraltar.
Why?
Because the UK government says:
โYou cannot get the paymentโฆ because the average winter temperature is higher than the warmest region of the UK.โ
Cold Brit (teeth chattering):
โHigher!? I could store frozen peas in my living room!
The dog wonโt get out of bed unless I pre-heat it with a hairdryer!โ
Sarcastic Mate:
โWell apparently the governmentโs never been to Burgosโฆ
Or Teruelโฆ
Or anywhere within 100 km of a Spanish mountain in January.โ
Reality Check:
Even if you meet every tick-boxโฆ
If you live in Spain,
you get ยฃ0.00 Winter Fuel Payment.
Meanwhile half of Europe gets it,
including countries where winter lasts 11 months and the twelfth is โslightly less cold.โ
Cold Brit:
โSo let me get this straight.
Brits in Austria, Sweden, and Germany get the paymentโฆ
But Brits in Spainโwhere Iโve just scraped ice off the inside of my windowsโdonโt?โ
Sarcastic Mate:
โCorrect.
But donโt worry.
Iโm starting a petition for Summer Air Con Payments.
Youโll get โฌ50 every time your electricity bill makes you cry.โ
Cold Brit:
โCan I claim tapas reimbursement too?โ
Sarcastic Mate:
