Every now and then you get a craving for something and today we visited Our Plaice La Marina to satisfy my need for fish & chips. When I lived in the UK, we used to have fish and chips most Saturdays when we were kids. Haddock, chips with bits, cooked in beef dripping. Absolutely gorgeous they were too.
As I got older this became a meal I probably had 2 or 3 times a month. Again when living, as I did, back in Yorkshire, there were 3 different chippies that were all cooked in beef dripping and used the freshest haddock. Fast forward to moving to Spain, and we basically only ever had fish & chips when we visited the UK. There was nowhere in Murcia or Andalucia that we found that could produce good quality ones.
Fast forward to us now living in the Costa Blanca area, and there are dozens of restaurants offering this popular dish. Most offer cod only, but as I prefer haddock, we decided to search some more. We had tried the traditional chippy in Catral a couple of times which has now closed down, and the quality there wasn’t too bad.
It must be said that I am quite set in my ways with food, so I’d rather have fish and chips from a chippy. I’d go to an Indian for an Indian curry, not the local pub. Same with Chinese food, I’d rather go to a traditional Chinese restaurant and not to a pizza place that also does a Chinese selection.
So, we decided to go to Our Plaice La Marina as this is, after all, a proper chippy!
What We Had At Our Plaice
We didn’t bother with starters or desserts; it was just the main event for us both today. Soph went for the lunch menu offer, which included a ‘small’ haddock, chips, a side of mushy peas, and a slice of bread and butter. I jumped straight in for the large haddock with chips. The small was on the large side though so all thoughts of having a dessert quickly went out of the window!
The batter on both was light and very good. We both found the fish to be cooked perfectly, with nice steaks of fish. The chips were proper chips, too!

What We Liked at Our Plaice La Marina
The food was just as expected, ‘proper’ fish and chips. We ate out on the terrace, enjoying the mid-November sun, which was around 26c. There were other diners outside and plenty indoors too.
What Could Have Been Improved
Just to be picky, it would have been great to have received a check back while eating, like the table beside us had received, rather than at the end. That being said, there was nothing at all wrong with the food that we had.
How Much Did It Cost?
The very filling lunch today came to €30.50. The fixed price lunch is good value at €11.00. My large haddock with chips at €14.00 was filling and, again, decent value. The pint of Mahou was €3.50, and Soph had her usual, the Coke, at €1.90

Would We Return To Our Plaice La Marina
If we had the craving for fish and chips, then this would be at the top of the list of places we would return to, for sure. They are cooked to order and come out hot and freshly prepared. The fact that they have haddock is another plus point.
