We called at the Dog And Firkin Catral to try their Wednesday fish and chips offer. At 5.95€, this is a great price, but was the quality up to standard?
We had had fish and chips several times from the Firkin Fryer back when it was open, so we had hoped these would be just as good.
This is a traditional pub-type location, not a restaurant, so there isn’t table service; it’s no big deal, it simply means you order is at the bar. There are several draught beers on tap, including some of the UK brands. If you want your pint of bitter, then they have it here. For the British expats, this is a popular venue, and it’s easy to understand why.

There are events and promotions every day of the week, so it’s worth checking their Facebook page before you go to see what’s on.
What We Had At The Dog And Firkin in Catral
As it was a hot, sunny day, a cold beer was in order. I went for a pint of Mahou, while Soph was happy with her usual Coke Zero. We both went for the midweek fish and chips special.
I should say that the photo makes the fish and chips look a little overdone, but they weren’t; it’s simply the shade from sitting on the outside covered terrace.

What We Liked At The Dog & Firkin Traditional Pub Catral
The food was great with ‘proper’ fish and chip shop chips. The fish was fresh and tasty, with a crisp and light batter; a perfect combination! Service was quick and friendly.
What Could Be Improved
A small issue was the condiments tray was brought out, but the vinegar literally had four drops left in the bottom. It was no big deal, and I could have gone back in and asked for a replacement. I’m sure it would have been no problem.
From a business perspective, there was an opportunity to offer upsells when I ordered. These could have been side orders of mushy peas, curry sauce, or even bread and butter. In all likelihood, we’d have added curry sauce and mushy peas.
How Much Did It Cost?
Our fish and chip lunch cost 16.20€. We didn’t get a receipt, but the fish and chips was €5.95 a portion, so the drinks came in at 4,30€ for a small bottled Coke Zero and a pint of Mahou.
This is nearly half the price of fish and chips at other locations. Though this is a special on a Wednesday, the same dish is available at 7,95€ on other days of the week.
Would We Return To The Dog And Firkin Catral?
Yes, we would, and not necessarily just for fish & chips.
Although people who know me have heard me say dozens of times that I didn’t move to Spain to find a Little Britain, we do go out for Indian, Chinese, Thai, or Pizza, as well as traditional Spanish options. The same applies to British food; it’s nice every now and again to have a little bit of what takes your fancy, hence the fish and chips, which absolutely did the job today.
