After seeing advertising for Tuck In Chippy on Montebello, we had already added them to our list. It’s been a while since we had fish and chips out here, but as it was Friday and we were waiting to hear back from the specialist about one of our dogs, we thought instead of driving home and then having to come back, we’d have an early lunch and this is what we did.
Being from Yorkshire originally, when we had fish and chips these were always cooked in beef dripping, and we had Haddock not Cod, so this was a real nice surprise to discover somewhere doing traditional fish and chips.
What We Had At The Tuck In Chippy
Drinks
As it is a Friday, I went for a pint of Mahou, while Soph had an Aquarius Lemon.
Food
Soph and I both went for the Special. This includes fish ( either Cod or Haddock ) and chips, with a side of mushy or garden peas and bread and butter. In this instance, we both went for Haddock.
Fish
The Haddock was lovely, the batter was excellent. The actual fish was white, a good sized portion and it just flaked away on the fork.
Chips
The first thing I did when the plates had been put down, was to take one chip and pop it straight into my mouth, no salt or pepper or condiments added, just to experience the taste. These were ‘proper’ chips, cooked in dripping and tasted delightful.
Mushy Peas
As soon as I tried these, I said to Soph ” these are proper mushy peas, just like my mum used to make”. By this I mean they’re not tinned mushy peas, but these are dried peas, steeped overnight. Yes, it’s a Northern thing, but to educate you:
Traditional British mushy peas are made using dried marrowfat peas, which are soaked overnight in a solution of water and bicarbonate of soda until the hard little pellets soften and swell. They are then boiled in fresh, clean water until the peas break down and become mushy, releasing their distinctive flavour and texture.
Bread & Butter
Not a lot to add really, a slice of bread each, a portion of butter but also a small serving of Tartar sauce.
What We Liked
Very welcoming and friendly service, great fish and chips, the venue is clean and tidy, and the toilets were spotless. There’s also a nice outdoor terrace too.
The kitchen has a good setup, a great range so they can cater easily if they get busy. The Tuck In Chippy does exactly what it says on the tin, great fish and chips and long may this continue.
What Could Be Improved
The only thing would be a printed bill, instead of the handwritten one, purely as it meant we didn’t get a copy. Nothing major really, just my own opinion.
How Much Did It Cost
The total for both of us was 21.80€. The meals were both 8.50€ each, so the drinks between them made up the 4.80€, so possibly 3.00€ for the pint of draught Mahou and 1.80€ for the canned soft drink. Tuck In Chippy does offer good value for money, as these are proper fish & chips, none of this oven chips and tinned peas scenario here.
Would We Return To Tuck In Chippy Montebello Urbanisation Algorfa
If we were in the mood for fish and chips, then this would be the place we’d head off out to first. It’s easy to find, just down the road from Catral and plenty of parking too.
How To Find Tuck In Chippy Montebello
They are very easy to find, especially if you know where Silverstones is, as they’re just a stone’s throw further up the street.
Coming from Catral follow the AP-7 to CV-940 in Algorfa. Take exit 745 ( the Quesada turn off ) from the AP-7. Take the first exit off the roundabout as though going to Zoco Market, but at the next, small roundabout take the first exit to the right. Follow along this road, going past the cement factory. At the junction by the Old Station bar, on the roundabout take the second exit onto Av. Romero. Then head slowly up the hill and you’ll see the Silverstones on your left.
The address is Av. Romero, 03176 Montebello, Alicante and you can find them here on Google Maps.
