Each year, after the crazy hot summers and the holidaymakers and tourists have gone back home, the locals in towns and villages get back to a sense of normality. There is, however, something that is another welcome event; this in Benijofar is known as the Rueda de Las Tapas: The Tapas Wheel.
This event is run in conjunction with the local town hall and several of the local bars and restaurants. Think of this as a pub crawl over 3 days with food included. The big difference here, compared to a pub crawl in the UK, is these are sensible beer measures, so you’re not getting off your face after 17+ pints of beer. Plus, tongue in cheek, it’s not often you get offered a chance to win money to drink beer and taste food, only here in Spain!
Each of the bars and restaurants taking part will serve a small tapas dish to have alongside your drink. What we really like about this type of event is that you get to visit bars and outlets you might not have visited before, or in some instances didn’t even know existed, if they’re in a small side street off the main roads in a town. You get to try their food, and to be honest, these small dishes are usually delicious.
Why These Tapas Trails Are A Great Idea
We try to visit a few of these, not because we have a drinking problem but because it gives us the chance to explore new areas and discover a bar or restaurant that you never visited before or, in some instances, didn’t even know existed.
The flip side of this is it is a great way for these smaller bars and restaurants to be able to advertise and promote their business without breaking the bank by paying for advertising.
On the times you get to a place and are blown away by the food, you’ll want to come back another day or evening to try out a menu del dia or maybe just another drink and tapas.
What encourages people to visit all three of the days is the fact the menu changes each day! So for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, each location will provide a different, tasty tapa dish accordingly.
You take your entry card round to the different venues and you get to score each, then nominate the location which in your opinion served the best tapas offering.
Dates For Rueda de Las Tapas: The Tapas Wheel 2023
The dates for the 13th Tapas Wheel have been confirmed as 29th and 30th September and also 1st October 2023. So grab your voting card and go explore the bars taking part. You might discover some really nice hidden gems.
Don’t Forget To Vote
Everyone will receive a map featuring various bars and restaurants, along with a voting sheet. As you visit different venues, you have the opportunity to cast your vote for your favorite one.
The establishment that garners the most votes will be honoured with a special commemorative plaque. Additionally, you can win something for yourself by taking part and voting.
If you’ve visited and scored at least 5 establishments and have got at least five stamps on your voting sheet will be entered into a raffle for a dinner for two! If you’ve outdone these and managed to get to 10 different bars, then with a minimum of 10 stamps on your voting sheet can participate in a raffle for a chance to win €100.
It’s not often you get offered a chance to win money to drink beer and taste food, but the Rueda de Las Tapas: The Tapas Wheel provides exactly that!
