We’d been out for our Thursday morning coffee hour and had decided we’d pop out somewhere for a spot of lunch. On our list was La Cerveceria in San Isidro, a very short 5 minute drive away.
We were the only non Spanish in there and we felt at home. The serving staff were all busy, there was a nice atmosphere and we’d chosen a table inside. There were people sat outside and also some sitting out doors in the courtyard area.
While we were ordering, we did it purely in Spanish and every interaction with the staff we did in Spanish. It was towards the end of the meal when Soph asked for the bill, we were talking to each other in English and the guy who had been serving us asked if we were English. He then spoke to us in English a couple of lines, but said he’d thought we were Spanish. This was either a huge compliment or he was stroking our egos, I suspect that it was a compliment. Our Spanish classes had obviously paid off.
What We Had
Soph and I both chose the menu del dia. We shared the house salad, we each had a bread roll, which came in a paper wrapper.
The house salad was tuna and it was fresh.

Starters we both went for the same, the guiso and for the mains we both chose the same, the combinado of chicken breast, which came with fries and a fried egg.

The guiso was a good sized serving, the meat fell off the bone and it was so tender. There were plenty of potatoes in the dish. The bread was ideal for dipping and enjoying the liquid.

Our mains were fine, the chicken was tender, the eggs cooked nicely and the fries were all evenly cooked.

From an offering of at least 8 different dessert options, as soon as I heard the words ‘tarta de queso’ ( the cheese cake ), I said yes to that, without waiting to hear what else was on offer. Soph once again went with the same as I’d chosen.
I have to admit this was a really nice cheese cake, one of the best I’ve had while living out here in Spain.

Then I finished off my meal with a Bombon coffee. This was a lovely Café Bombón and I really enjoyed it.
What We Liked
The service was very quick, friendly and welcoming. The facilities were clean and tidy, the restrooms were spotless. There is on street parking by La Cerveceria, but there’s also the car park available too, in the square, which is free.
What Could Be Improved
As tempting as it is to say a written menu, there is a chalkboard outside with the daily menu options on there. A receipt would have been nice, maybe had we asked for one, we would have been handed one, however we didn’t see anyone else being given a receipt.
What Did It Cost
Soph and I had a disagreement over this part. I personally thought that the bill came to 28.50€, which I think breaks down as the menu del dia being 13.50€ each and my coffee being 1.50€, but please do not take these as gospel.
Soph who usually pays the bills, thinks it was cheaper than that, but as there was no bill or receipt presented, it would mean we’d need to return to eat there again, just to find out who was correct.
Irrespective, it was good value for money.
Would We Return To La Cerveceria
If we were in the town and looking for a cheap, quick lunch with the Spanish, then yes this would be on our list of places, for sure.
How To Find La Cerveceria San Isidro
If you’re coming from Catral, take the CV-909 and head out towards San Isidro. Go over the fly over where the train runs, passing the Oasis Lagoon Park on your left. Stay on this road so you drive past the rail station. Head into the town and when you come to the traffic lights, just past the Hipebar supermarket, take the right, onto Rda. Parcelas. Follow this 100 yards and you’ll see the bar on the left, and there’s plenty of parking available.
They do have a very inactive Facebook page.
As I say, La Cerveceria is another place where we have called and found ourselves to be the only non Spanish in there. if these establishments are not good enough for the Spanish, they do not survive, but this was busy today, so they’re clearly doing something right.
