Wednesday, 1st November, and we got a chance to try out the new Browns Wellington Wednesday menu.
We’d visited here to try out their Sunday lunch and did our usual impartial write-up, which you can read here if you haven’t seen it already. Then, out of the blue, we were contacted by the management team and asked if we’d like to return to sample their Wellington Wednesday. How could we refuse? It is great to see that restaurants can see that our feedback is aimed at being constructive, impartial, and there to try to help.
We’ll let the food do the talking in this review.
Homemade Kalamata Olive & Seed Bread
This is simply the most amazing bread with a super soft texture that’s a little denser than the normal loaf. Give me a loaf of this and nothing else, and I’d leave a happy man!
Starters
The broth for the Red Curry Mussels was very tasty and demanded to be centre of attention in this dish. The Tea Smoked Wild Salmon Tartare was subtle in taste but combined a wide range of flavours and the Tapioca Cracker was excellent, the perfect contrast in texture to the fish.
Mains at Browns Wellington Wednesday
The Wellington was excellent, with the fillet cooked perfectly and a nice, generous-sized portion. The tender and succulent meat really made this dish.
The Thai Red Black Tiger Prawns Curry was as good as some of the dishes I have eaten in Thailand. I do like heat with my Asian food, and this had a nice undertone of hotness without being too hot; the red chilies did the trick perfectly.
The Iberian Bellota Pork Secreto was so tender and did true justice to the cut of meat. The crushed potatoes were the smoothest my mother-in-law has had for many a year, not a single lump or bump in them, she said.
Desserts
Sticky Date & Apricot Pudding with Toffee Sauce & Mascarpone Ice Cream. This was a very rich dessert making the ice cream the perfect balancing accompaniment.
Peanut & Caramel Cheesecake & Dulce de Leche ice cream. I loved this the last time; it makes me think of a deconstructed Snickers bar! And again, this did not disappoint.
Drinks
It’s nice to order a pint of beer and get a full pint! The Fruit Punch mocktail was lovely and refreshing.
I also asked for an Old Fashioned, which is my drink of choice for a cocktail, and this was very well made; the orange was evident in both aroma and taste but did not detract from the bourbon.
Final Thoughts
This is excellent, restaurant-quality food. The location is relaxed with a nice, chilled ambiance. One thing I would say, though, is do not wait to book your table. Every table was in use; the place was packed.
