We eventually got round to having lunch at Bar Merendero Esther Callosa De Segura. If you are looking for a true taste of Spain, this doesn’t get much more authentic than here. This is one of those Spanish eateries where you are the only none Spanish in there, which is something we love.
If it’s good enough for the locals and it is busy, then they are doing something right!
So think along the lines of our recent lunch of the Menu Del Dia At L’escorxador, where we were the only non Spanish there and it was busy, with regulars and also people who were passing by.
What We Had Bar Merendero Esther
Drinks
I had a beer with my menu del dia, this was a bottle of Mahou ( I think , as I have forgotten ) while Soph had a Coke Zero with her lunch.
Food
Salad To Share.
A straight forward, basic fresh salad. This was brought out just after the bread basket.
Fresh Bread.
A lovely fresh bread roll each.
Starters.
We both went for the same starter, which we didn’t get the name of but it was like a version of Reclutas, in my mind. Served on dry, crsipbread type base, it was like a seafood salad with onion, mayonnaise and lemon juice, garnished with anchovy fillet.
Tasty and filling and I’d have this again!
Mains.
Again we both went for the same main, carne. This was a popular choice, with many diners having this for their main course. Fresh, golden yolk egg, tasty meat and this was a filling dish especially after the starters.
Dessert.
There were choices available but we both went for the cheese cake option. This was a nice little dish, tasty and home made.
Coffee.
I pushed the boat out a little and had a Belmonte coffee to finish my lunch.
What We Liked
This is a friendly and welcoming place. It’s a truly authentic Spanish cheap and cheerful eatery. No airs and graces, no pretentiousness it is a Ronseal location, as seen on the tin.
What Could Be Improved
To be blunt, there’s nothing I’d change, we liked the authenticness of the place. We didn’t get a receipt, so if I was going to be mega picky, but then again if we’d have thought at the time to ask, I’m sure we’d have got one.
How Much Did It Cost
Altogether the bill was 21.80€. This was 20.00€ for both of the menu del dias and then 1.80€ for my Belmonte.
For the price, this was a cheap and cheerful lunch and did I mention it was filling?
Would We Return To Esthers
Yes basically, if we wanted a cheap lunch or had friends / guests wanting a proper Spanish lunch experience.
How To Find Bar Merendero Esther In Callosa De Segura
Blink and you’ll miss it most of the time, except lunchtime when you’ll see cars parked on the road side.
If you’re coming from Catral or off the AP7 head towards Callosa. Head out along the CV-913, keep going so you pass where KM5 tapas bar was on the left, across the roundabout where Redondo bar is, then straight ahead.
You’ll go past Bar Restaurante Frasquitín on your right and keep going till you see Esthers on the left.
Their address is Carretera Catral, 148, Callosa de Segura. Be aware though parking is very limited as it’s roadside on the main road. We got there just before 2pm, as we knew parking was scarce.
They’re not active as such on Facebook, they tend to post days when they’re closed and not daily menus. However, don’t let that put you off, if you’re passing do drop in for a lunch.
