Today we went to Lilly Bunters Tea Room & Cakery in Catral. We had a couple of chores in town which we completed quicker than expected, we also needed a couple of bits from one of the shops so we decided to pop in here.
Although the sun was out, if you were in the sun it was lovely and warm, but the sun hadn’t reached the outdoor seating area, so we sat inside for this visit.
Friends had been when it very first opened and suggested it was a place we should visit and do a write up about. And so, here it is.
What We Had
I ordered a cafe con leche, Soph went for a black tea, which came in a good sized mug. We had said we’d try a piece of cake each and share. While browsing the display I’d seen the savoury section and suggested we have an empanada too.
The empanada was delicious, the meat was tasty, the filling was hot and fresh. This was a really nice empanada and I have eaten several hundred in my years out here in Spain.
For the cakes we went for the apple and caramel crumble and also the berry crumble. These were good sized portions, nicely presented and were good to have with the drinks.
What We Liked At Lilly Bunters
Service was friendly and quick. The decor and ambiance were welcoming. The quality of the food was good.
What Could Be Improved
This is broken down into two parts and is with absolutely best intentions as we want them to do brilliantly well, as they really do have a great offering.
Customers
From a Lilly Bunters customers perspective, I’d like to get a receipt but if there isn’t the option for this, at least have a notice board and/or menus available, showing the prices.
There’s a great place on the wall between the cake display and the cold drinks fridge to have a blackboard fitted to the wall.
Can I say blackboard still or is this not politically correct? Let’s try chalkboard, if that is the case. This could show the main items that are available and also give the prices.
Business
There should be a specials board inside or on each table a printed flyer showing the daily specials as well as what other items are available. It was only when we were talking, I said to Soph; ” if this was my place, I’d be looking at offering afternoon teas etc”. She replied, “They do, I’m sure I have seen it mentioned on Facebook “, which is fine if you are following their Facebook page.
Sometimes it just takes a little nudge to get the extra sale and having a menu / pricelist available is the easiest way to do this.
How Much Did It Cost?
The final bill for a mug of tea, a cafe con leche, an empanada, and 2 pieces of cakes cake to the grand total of 11.50€, but there was no receipt given.
This means we have no idea what each component cost, so this is just a guess, but the hot drinks were possibly €2 each, the empanada could have been €1.50 and this leaves €6 so maybe the cake was €3 per portion. I would say here, tongue in cheek ‘ your guess is as good as mine’, but it wasn’t crazy expensive!
Would We Return To Lilly Bunters
Yes, we would and it’s a nice place to bring visitors and friends. Hopefully, they will be taking part in the Catral Tapas Trail in October to give people chance to visit who don’t get into town that often.
