If you thought you’d seen everything on the Costa Blanca, wait until you stumble across Cuevas del Rodeo Rojales—a real underground masterpiece tucked into the hills of Rojales. This is a town we really like, some great places to eat, some lovely sights to see and here we look at another one.

A Little Slice of History (With a Twist)

The story of the Cuevas del Rodeo Rojales goes way back to the 18th century, when coal miners from Murcia arrived looking for agricultural work. Rather than build houses above ground, they decided to dig themselves homes straight into the hillside—functional, cool in summer, and totally unique.

Later, they were occupied by Gypsies – though like most good Spanish stories, there are probably several versions depending on who’s telling it and how much wine they’ve had. And now, they’ve had a new lease of life as artists’ studios and creative spaces.

Art, Culture, and a Whole Lot of Character

Today, more than 20 of the cave houses have been lovingly restored, with others still awaiting their turn. Wander through the site and you’ll find artists at work—painting, sculpting, crafting jewellery, and creating eye-catching installations.

It’s an artsy little haven, where you can buy a piece of local artwork or simply admire the creativity on show. Some days, if you’re lucky, you’ll even catch the artists in action and have a chat about their craft.

Café, Music, and Sunday Fun

As if the caves weren’t charming enough, there’s also a quirky little cave café near the top of the site. It’s perfect for grabbing a cold drink and soaking up the laid-back vibe—either inside one of the cosy alcoves or out on the colourful terrace.

There’s also a covered stage area that hosts everything from live music to cultural events throughout the year. Sundays are particularly lively here:

  • Every Sunday at 7:30pm: Open mic night—bring your guitar or just enjoy the show.
  • First Sunday of the month at 11:30am: Arts & Crafts Fair with stalls, local artists, and a lovely community feel.

For group bookings or info about events, you can contact the local Ayuntamiento at 966 714160 or on cuevasdelrodeo@rojales.es.

Don’t Miss: The Famous Shell House

While you’re there, don’t skip the legendary Shell House—a true labour of love by local artist Manuel Fulleda Alcaraz.

He’s spent years decorating his home in intricate mosaics made entirely from shells, creating a magical castle-like structure that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a fairy tale.

A real labour of love to add 700,000 shells over a 20 year period!

Street Art & Hidden Corners

Keep an eye out for the graffiti and street art dotted around the area on your way to the caves or the Shell House. It adds even more colour and creativity to your wander.

Good to Know

  • Cuevas del Rodeo Rojales Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm.
  • Location: Opposite the primary school CEIP Poeta Miguel Hernández—just follow the signs around Rojales.
  • Accessibility: Paths are fairly easy to navigate, though some areas may be uneven—it is a hillside, after all. There are walkways but these are steepish in places!
  • Parking: Free parking nearby; easy to reach by foot from the town centre.

Final Thoughts

Cuevas del Rodeo Rojales really is one of those “hidden gems” people always talk about but rarely find. Whether you’re an art lover, history buff, or just fancy something a bit different from the usual coastal hotspots, this place delivers.

Come for the caves, stay for the art, and leave with a newfound appreciation for Rojales’ creative heart—plus maybe a handmade souvenir or two. After your visit to the Shell House orCuevas del Rodeo Rojales, pop into town for a bite to eat.

One thing we really like about Rojales is there are so many great places to eat. If you like a great beer selection, then Triple Brew needs to be on your list.
Spanish eateries here include Pedros, the quirky but brilliant Bar El Resspiro, which is a one of a kind place, La Cantina if you want somewhere with plenty of parking and a relaxed atmosphere.
