I’ve lost track of the number of times we have called into Bar Sonia Benijofar and just had a drink then moved on to somewhere else. I think in part it’s been because it’s been so busy, that getting a seat has been quite difficult at times. The slight downside here if you’re wanting to sit outside on the covered terrace is that it’s set up in tables of 6 and you’ll find suddenly that 4 strangers come and sit on the same table, next to you. BUT, do not let this put you off! If you are doing the 2024 Benijofar Tapas Route, then you can visit here then too!
Anyway, we were passing through, decided to call for a drink as the terrace was quite quiet, and but I’m so glad we managed to experience what this bar can offer.
What We Had At Bar Sonia
It could almost be easier to say what we didn’t have, but then again there were 3 of us sharing.
Drinks
Draught beer tanques for me, Jules had Tintos and Soph was on the soft drinks as she offered to drive.
Food
We started off with a tapas each, so I ordered boquerones, albondigas and also veal in Vega Baja style sauce. The wonderful woman serving us also suggested bread, so we agreed to that too. Now while eating these dishes, which we shared out between the three of us, we perused the menu and decided we’d stay on have a second drink and order more tapas.
The next round of tapas was a couple of the Iberian ham croquettes and we also had 4 of the Montaditos, these being a couple of the Benijófar and one each of the Brascada and also the Sobrasada with Manchego cheese.
Boquerones
These are one of my go to dishes as I adore oily fish and love these, especially in vinegar. We’d eaten half before remembering to grab a photo.
Albondigas
Nice sized portion, plenty of sauce to dip too.
Veal in Vega Baja style sauce
The sauce was fabulous with this dish, I happened to dunk bread into this before trying the dish. There was depth of flavour to this and there were plenty of mushrooms in with the meat.
Bread
Chunky bread, lovely soft and fresh, ideal for mopping up these tapas dishes.
Croquetas
These Iberian ham croquettes were very nice, cooked perfectly and the quality of the ham just added to the dish.
Montaditos:
First off was the Benijófar, which is pork loin, bacon, cheese and fried green pepper. This is a filling tapas, very tasty and packed with filling. Very enjoyable.
Next was the Brascada consisting of grilled veal, grilled serano ham, fried onion and tartar sauce. Again this was tasty, plenty of filling and hit the spot.
The third was the Sobrasada with Manchego cheese. This was delightful, ( Sobrasada is a distinctive, paprika-spiked, raw, cured sausage that’s eaten like pâté ) and paired very well with this delicious cheese.
What We Liked At Cafeteria Bar Sonia
The ambiance of a traditional tapas bar, the service was fast, friendly and welcoming.
The place mats to eat are actually printed with the menu on both sides, plus they have these in English and Spanish, so it’s very easy to order. If you’re tech savvy, they have QR codes too for the menus. There’s also a good website with all the details on there, including the menu del dia, tapas menu and more.
Another good thing here is they do a great priced menu del dia, but they also do an Express Menu Lunch. Any dish from the daily menu along with House Dessert or Fruit, Bread, Drink and Coffee
(Soft Drink / Tank / Water 1.5 L / Glass of Wine) which at the time of writing is just 9.50€
What Could Be Improved
Excellent service, excellent food and all at a very affordable price, so here there’s nothing that needs improving.
What It Cost Us Today
The three of us left feeling full and satisfied, the bill was 40.30€ in total which included a couple of drinks each, so this was very good value.
Drinks
I had a couple of tanques of the draught beer, at a very reasonable 2.60€. Soph was driving so stuck to a couple of soft drinks of Aquarious lemon at 9.50€ and Jules had just the two Tinto De Veranos at 9.50€
Food
Boquerones 2.90€
Veal in Vega Baja style sauce 3.80€
Albondigas 3.60€
Iberian ham croquettes 1.50€ each
Benijófar montadito 2.80€ each
Brascada montadito 2.80€
Sobrasada with Manchego cheese montadito 2.50€
Would We Return To Tapas Bar Sonia Benijofar
This is one of those places where it’s not a case of “would we”, but more of a ” when are we “.
How To Get To Bar Sonia In Benijofar
Coming from Quesada as we did on this visit, come past Mercadona and over the top straight along and down Av Federíco García Lorca. Part way down on the left, you’ll see the covered seating area.
So if you’re coming in from the AP7 or from Benimar, come up the hill, which is Av Federíco García Lorca. The bar is on your right, just after the turning on the left which is sign posted to the town hall.
Easy to find, but there is also Google Maps Here to double check.
Opening Hours
Monday to Friday 7.00 am to 12 am
Saturdays 7.30 am to 12 am
Sundays 8.00 am to 12 am
As I mentioned earlier on, we’ve been here before on several occasions but never got round to having food here. This though is a lovely place, honest food and nothing pretentious about the place.
