Wise Alternatives In Spain

HeyDaveHere, March 12, 2024March 12, 2024

We’ll look into Wise alternatives, although we know a lot of people use Wise, it’s always good to look at other options. As a Yorkshireman, it’s been said I can be frugal at times, but if I can save money on bank charges and fees, it’s better in my pocket than the bankers.

I do chuckle to myself when people are complaining as they are charged, for example, €1.80 to withdraw cash. Now let’s do some sums here. If you are taking out of the ATM €20, then yes it seems a huge chunk, as a %, but come on folks, take out €50 or €200 instead. This dilutes the actual % and saves you from having to draw another €20 the next day. The second thing to consider is, compare these small fees to the monthly fees charged by the Spanish banks!

Navigating Spanish Finances: Comparing Revolut, Wise, and N26 for Cash Withdrawals

For expats and travelers in Spain, navigating the financial landscape can be daunting. Choosing the right financial service provider is crucial, especially regarding cash withdrawals. This guide delves into three popular options: Revolut, Wise, and N26, comparing their fees, limitations, and overall suitability for cash withdrawals in Spain.

Understanding Your Needs:

Before diving into specifics, it’s important to understand your individual needs:

  • Frequency of cash withdrawals: How often will you need to withdraw cash?
  • Average withdrawal amounts: What are your typical withdrawal amounts per transaction?
  • Travel plans: Will you be traveling throughout Spain or residing in a specific location?

The Wise Alternatives Contenders:

  • Revolut: A financial app offering currency exchange, international money transfers, and debit cards.
  • Wise: A money transfer service that allows holding multiple currencies and sending/receiving international payments.
  • N26: A digital bank offering a mobile app, debit card, and various banking features.

Monthly fee for exceeding free allowance€1 or 1% (whichever is higher)Transaction fee applies€2 per withdrawal

Detailed Analysis:

Revolut:

  • Pros: Offers a free monthly allowance for ATM withdrawals (€200), competitive exchange rates, and various other features like virtual cards and currency exchange.
  • Cons: Charges a fee after exceeding the free allowance (€1 or 1%, whichever is higher), monthly limits may not be suitable for high cash users, and some users have reported issues with customer service.
  • Sign up for your Revolut account here.

Wise:

  • Pros: Transparent fee structure, competitive exchange rates, and ability to hold multiple currencies.
  • Cons: No free ATM withdrawals, and each withdrawal incurs a transaction fee, which can be less suitable for frequent cash users.
  • Sign up for your Wise account here.

N26:

  • Pros: Offers three free ATM withdrawals per month in Spain (excluding other countries), mobile app with various features, and a free standard account option.
  • Cons: Limited free withdrawals (only three per month), charges €2 per withdrawal after exceeding the free limit, and not available in all countries.
  • Sign up for your N26 account here.

Additional Considerations:

  • Currency exchange rates: All three providers offer competitive exchange rates, with slight variations.
  • Customer service: Consider user reviews and experiences regarding customer service responsiveness and assistance.
  • Additional features: Look beyond just cash withdrawals and consider features like budgeting tools, international money transfers, and investment options offered by some providers.

Making the Right Choice:

The ideal Wise alternatives choice boils down to your individual needs and usage patterns. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Frequent cash users with high withdrawal amounts: Revolut’s free monthly allowance (€200) might be suitable, but be mindful of fees after exceeding the limit.
  • Infrequent cash users with low withdrawal amounts: N26’s three free monthly withdrawals within Spain might be sufficient. However, if you need to withdraw cash outside of Spain, consider other options.
  • Those prioritizing low fees and transparency: Wise offers clear and competitive fees but doesn’t offer free ATM withdrawals.

Final Note:

It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Research and compare different providers based on your specific needs, considering not just cash withdrawal fees but also other features and limitations. Additionally, consider exploring other options like traditional Spanish banks or prepaid travel cards, depending on your specific circumstances. There are plenty of Wise alternatives, but these may not fit your own needs. It’s always best to have a back up option, should you lose your bank card or phone with a bank app on there.

Remember, a well-informed decision is crucial for managing your finances effectively and enjoying a smooth financial experience in Spain.
