After having this place suggested to us as one we should visit, we finally got to Makai Cafe La Zenia today. So after doing the bits and pieces we needed to do, we put their address into our trusty satnav and set off.
If you’re in a car, I’d say car parking is tight on the street, but if you time it right, you might strike lucky, as we did. We came down Av. de la Playa and there were two or three parking spaces on that road, but following the route, we took the left and the next left onto the actual street.
There’s plenty of seating outdoors on the shaded terrace, and there’s ample additional seating indoors too.
If you’re wanting to try something different, then this is the place to try out. There are some dishes on their menu that I cannot recall seeing here in Spain, although we have eaten them when we’ve been travelling in places like Dubai.
What We Had
Food.
Soph had their Turkish Eggs, which is seasoned yoghurt, a couple of poached eggs, garlic, spiced oil and olives, served with lovely naan bread.

I went with the Shakshuka, which is a poached egg in a spicy tomato, onion, pepper and garlic sauce. This came with a couple of pieces of crusty bread.
This was a a wonderful combination of taste and texture, served hot in a skillet.

Both dishes were well presented, colourful and tasted great!.
Drinks.
Soph had a tea and then had another later on. I, on the other hand had the urge for a milkshake, so went for the peanut and date shake. This was great, very indulgent but with loads of fruit in the bottom, so maybe a little bit healthy?

What We Liked
Faultless service, we had interactions with 3 different staff members all of who were friendly, super efficient and they worked well as a team.
The menu choices are really good, there is something for everyone on there. The food was superb, very tasty, fresh and really enjoyable. I also liked my milkshake, it was a different flavour combination, but it worked really well.
The food is beautifully presented and they showcase several dishes on their Instagram page too.
What Could Be Improved
With the milkshakes that contain fruit etc, a long handled teaspoon would have been great.. I didn’t ask for one, as I ended up using the straw, but just one thing for next time.
Get a chippy in to sort out the door to the gents, that was sticking.
What Did It Cost At Makai Cafe La Zenia
Our brunch today at Makai Cafe La Zenia came to a grand total of 28.15€.
Soph had a couple of teas to drink at 1.90€ each, I had the lovely Peanut and date milkshake at 6.45€.
My Shakshuka was 8.95€, while Sophie’s Turkish Eggs were also 8.85€.

Would We Return To Makai Cafe
We both said we’d come back to Makai Cafe La Zenia, because there were several really nice sounding dishes on the menu, plus the food that was being brought out to other tables both looked and smelled really good. I’d also try out another milkshake, but unsure as to which one to go for, maybe the Fat Freddy!
Soph also had a wander around the clothes shop, which is next door. Lots of nice items and just like the food, some different items from the normal offerings.
How To Find Makai Cafe La Zenia
It’s easy to find with a satnav, especially if you don’t know the area. From Catral junction by San Isidro roundabout it’s doable in just under 30 minutes down the AP7 and paying the tolls. It’s another 10 minutes or so, if you avoid the tolls via San Miguel De Salinas.
We had to call into Torrevieja on the way home, so we went back via the N-332.
Their address is Calle San Antonio Zen, 7, Locale 14, Orihuela, Spain
They have listed on their active Facebook page too, a contact number – 865 75 72 34
