As promised here, we returned to the Bombay for another curry. But did our Bombay Catral return visit live up to expectations?
This time there were three of us, as we’d taken Sophs mum with us. We hadn’t booked, we just turned up and there were 3 other tables on the terrace already eating or ordering. There were a couple of reserved tables, including one for 17 people.
What We Had
We went for the very good value menu del dia lunch option.
Drinks.
I had a tanque of beer, while the ladies both went for a Coke Zero. I also had a cafe con leche at the end of the meal, instead of the ice cream dessert option.
Food.
What I like about the lunch menu here is that you can choose any starter, any main and any bread or rice, without being charged any extra.
Starters
We were brought out a basket with 3 popadoms and pickle tray.

For our choice of starters, I went for the Mint Chicken Tikka, Sophs mum had the mixed starter and Soph had the chicken chat puri, as she did on the previous visit here.

My starter was nice, the chicken fresh and tender, the mint sauce not overpowering.
Sophs mum was surprised at the portion size, but managed to eat most of it, luckily I was on hand to eat the samosa and it was very tasty.

Soph enjoyed her starter, it hit the spot, she said.
Mains
Something new for me this time, as I tried the lamb Khumbwala. I have never had this dish before, so wasn’t sure what to expect. It was pleasant enough, not overly hot, but it was tasty. The lamb was tender, but it was small pieces.

Sophs mum had the mango chicken and she liked it, good balance of sweetness and a gentle heat. She had the garlic naan with her meal and said that this was very tasty.

Soph had the chicken tikka sizzler, which was a good portion size. The sauce for the side was ok but not quite as tasty as other dishes she’s had here before.

We both had the Bombay special naan, and these were great, almost a mini meal in themselves.

Desserts
Chocolate ice cream for Soph, her mum went for the vanilla flavour. As mentioned above, I opted for a coffee instead of the dessert.

What We Liked
Can’t fault the prompt and friendly service but this is very good value for a filling lunch option. I was charged for a cana on the bill, which is good. I’ve been to places in the past who ‘forget’ that the set menu includes a small beer and charge me for the large beer at the full price. This however is one of those places who charge correctly.
What Could Be Improved
To be fair, nothing springs to mind on this Bombay Catral return visit. Service was on point, despite them being very busy, including a reserved table for a party of 17 who turned up while we were on our mains.
What Did It Cost.
The final bill was 40.35€, broken down as 3 of the lunch menus at 12.95€ per person while my cana surcharge was just an extra 1.50€.

When we asked for the bill, we were offered chupitos each, so we all had the Baileys. Again, another nice touch.
Would We Do Another Bombay Catral Return Visit?
In due course we will do so. While we were having lunch, a friend walked past and advised he was going to the Punjabi, in his opinion the better option. I said to him, “OK, we’ll try there again next time and decide then”, so that will be our next Catral curry lunch.
As with most things food related, it can be very subjective as to what is a good meal and what isn’t. originally from near Bradford, I’ve eaten curries for well over 40 years, so I do know a bit about them, both in Bradford and also in India, Thailand, Dubai and Goa.
