Legal Essentials In the Car – VERY IMPORTANT!
Here is Spain we have some ” must haves ” in the car at all times, such as the V16 beacon.
Physical Items – Important!
Two warning triangles are compulsory, these are to be placed front and rear of the car (at a distance of 50 meters). High visibility jackets are also compulsory & to be kept in the vehicle at all times – you can be fined for walking on the hard shoulder without one. A spare wheel or tyre repair kit is mandatory too.
A first aid kit, spare bulbs are recommended too, but the above are compulsary.
Taking a caravan or trailer?
It is mandatory to take a fire extinguisher with you when towing a trailer or caravan.
Paperwork – Important!
You must have with you the following; Your driving licence, Permiso de circulación del vehículo, ITV sticker or card, Insurance papers (Seguros).
Glasses – Important!
Yes, you read this right. If you wear glasses on a day to day basis, then you must carry a spare pair in the car. I am also advised that if you have had correctional surgery (normally laser treatment) on your eyes, this must be noted on your driving licence!
The need for the glasses is that if you break the main pair you drive in, then your driving ability and vision will probably be impared. Hence the need for you to have a second pair available.

For tourists, driving in Spain is a great way to explore the country, and understanding the legal requirements is imperative to ensure you’re driving within the law.
Types of Driving Permits for Tourists
As a tourist, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Spain, depending on the type of driving licence you hold. An IDP translates your driving licence details into Spanish, ensuring local authorities can verify your credentials if necessary. The UK government website has more information for people in the UK.
| Type of Licence | IDP Required? |
|---|---|
| Valid UK photocard driving licence | No |
| Older, paper-based driving licence (without a photocard) | Yes |
| Licence from another country | Check with the Spanish authorities |
| Licence with less than 6 months’ validity | Check with the Spanish authorities |
Any driver who holds an older, paper-based driving licence (without a photocard) may need to obtain an IDP before their trip.
