HeyDaveHere, January 12, 2026January 12, 2026

There are accidents.

There are unfortunate coincidences.

And then thereโ€™s going on a programme literally designed to make you buy a property abroadโ€ฆ and being absolutely outraged when you do exactly that.

This weekโ€™s headline belongs firmly in the British Logic Hall of Fame:

Unexpectedly.

As if theyโ€™d popped out for a loaf of bread and somehow returned with a three-bedroom villa, a pool, and an annual community fee.

Letโ€™s just pause and take this in.

You apply for a show called;

You fly to Spain.

You are shown multiple houses.

You sit on a sofa while presenters gently nudge you with phrases like โ€œCould you see yourself living here?โ€ and โ€œShall we put an offer in?โ€

And then, somehow, when you buy one

Youโ€™re furious.

Apparently, this decision has now โ€œscrewed everything upโ€ and โ€œruined their livesโ€.

Which is a bold claim, considering nobody:

Kidnapped them

Held a notary hostage

Or forced their hand while chanting โ€œSIGN ITโ€

This is like saying:

โ€œI didnโ€™t plan to spend ยฃ100 in the pub, but after I went in and kept ordering drinks, it somehow wasnโ€™t my fault.โ€

Or the all-time classic:

โ€œI only left the house for a pint of milk. I came back two days later with the shakes and an STD. I blame the supermarket.โ€

Yes. Clearly, the milk aisleโ€™s fault.

Facebook, of course, responded exactly as expected.

One commenter claimed this happens all the time:

Another sympathised deeply:

โ€œTheyโ€™ve ruined their lives.โ€

Yes. Ruined.

With sunshine.

And a terrace.

And probably better coffee.

The thing is, nobody on A Place In The Sun ever goes on by accident. Thereโ€™s no random draw where producers knock on your door and say, โ€œRight, pack a bag, youโ€™re off to Murcia.โ€

You donโ€™t โ€œunexpectedlyโ€:

Transfer tens of thousands of pounds

Hire a lawyer

Complete at a notary

Thatโ€™s not an accident.

Thatโ€™s a series of deliberate decisions with wine involved.

And look, buyerโ€™s remorse is real. Spain in August looks very different to Spain in February when your finca has no insulation and youโ€™re wearing three jumpers indoors. But blaming the show for your own impulse purchase is a bit like blaming the menu for ordering dessert.

At the end of the day, A Place In The Sun didnโ€™t screw anything up.

It did exactly what it says on the tin.

The only real shock here is that anyone is surprised.

Next week, no doubt:

โ€œMan devastated after joining Love Island and meeting peopleโ€

โ€œBrit furious after moving to Spain and discovering itโ€™sโ€ฆ Spainโ€

Tragic. Absolutely tragic.

It’s bad enough that this Liverpool Echo News’s post was published, but imagine being the numpties who took part in this.
