Vamos

Vamos! A Deep Dive into Spain’s Most Useful Word

HeyDaveHere, May 27, 2024May 27, 2024

Ever been in Spain and heard “vamos” thrown around like confetti? You’re not alone. This little five-letter word pops up everywhere, from bustling markets to lazy beach days. But what exactly does it mean? Buckle up, because this word is about to become your new best Spanish buddy.

Vamos as a Go-Getter: Let’s Get Moving!

The most common meaning is a simple “let’s go!” It’s a call to action, a nudge to get things started. Stuck at the tapas bar debating what to order? Vamos, try that delicious-looking jamón! Missed the bus? No worries, vamos, we can hail a taxi! Vamos is your go-to word for getting yourself and your companions moving, be it to another bar, to the beach or just about anywhere. Think of this as a verbal nudge in the ribs, if you get my drift.

Vamos amigo

With Encouragement: You Got This!

This popular word isn’t just about physical movement. It’s also a powerful word of encouragement. Imagine your friend struggling with a tricky Spanish sentence. A quick “vamos, tú puedes!” (Let’s go, you can do it!) can give them the confidence boost they need. It’s a way to say, “I believe in you, keep going!” on those moments when things might feel a little tricky.

Used with Disagreement: Hold On Now!

Sometimes, this word takes on a slightly different meaning. It can be used to express disagreement, like a gentle “hold on a minute.” Maybe your travel buddy suggests a museum when you’re craving some beach time. A “Vamos, vamos, mejor vamos a la playa” (Wait, wait, let’s go to the beach instead) can politely express your preference. It’s all about the tone – a slightly raised eyebrow or a playful nudge can help get your point across.

The Art Using it Like a Local

Now you know the different meanings, but how do you use vamos like a true Spaniard? Here are some tips:

  • The Inflection Magic: The tone of voice plays a big role. A strong “vamos!” is a powerful call to action, while a softer version is more encouraging. Experiment and find what feels natural.
  • Body Language Matters: A raised fist pump with vamos adds excitement, while a hand gesture towards your destination clarifies where you’re headed. Don’t be afraid to use your whole body!
  • The Context is Key: Remember, as with several words, this also depends on the situation. In a crowded market, a simple “vamos” might be enough to navigate through the throng. But with friends, a playful “vamos a ver esa película” (Let’s go see that movie) adds a touch of personality.

Beyond the Basics: A Couple Of Variations

Vamos is a versatile chameleon, and it has a few cool variations:

  • Vámonos: This means “let’s go” too, but with a sense of urgency. Imagine you see a flamenco show about to start – “vámonos, no nos lo perdamos!” (Let’s go, we can’t miss it!).
  • Dale: This is a super casual way to say “let’s do it!” It’s a quick and informal way to get on board with an idea. Perfect for those beach volleyball challenges with your new Spanish friends.

Another couple of alternatives include:

Aprisa. Which translates as quickly.
Apúrate. You’d use this to speed someone up, as in hurry up.
Deprisa. This is the word for quick.

More Than Just a Word, It’s a Vibe

This is more than just a word; it’s a vibe. It captures the Spanish spirit of getting things done, encouraging others, and enjoying life to the fullest. So next time you’re in Spain, don’t be shy – throw out a vamos and see where it takes you. You might just find yourself becoming part of the lively Spanish conversation, all thanks to this magical two-letter word.

Bonus Tip: Learning a few other basic Spanish phrases like “hola” (hello), “gracias” (thank you), and “por favor” (please) will go a long way, as we have found with “Salud” too.. But with vamos in your vocabulary, you’re already well on your way to navigating Spain with confidence and maybe even making some new friends along the way.
It’s best to learn Spanish if you’re moving out here to live, either full time as a resident or even for long stays in a holiday home. We eventually got around to taking adult Spanish classes and am so glad we did.

Try this amazing Costa Blanca Full-day Off Road Tour, where you can get away from the strip in Benidorm.

Depart in the morning from Benidorm, and set off into nature. You’ll admire the spectacular lakes and mountains of the Guadalest Valley, visit ancient Moorish villages, and head to the Fuentes del Algar nature reserve to see the waterfalls.

You’ll enjoy this and even get a chance to go for a dip, to cool off.
